Patients will have to provide proof of identity before getting hospital treatment under a major crackdown on health tourism. NHS Hospitals will also charge upfront for non-emergency care if a patient is not a UK resident or from an EU country. Emergency treatment will continue to be provided and invoiced later. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said: “We have no problem with overseas visitors using our NHS as long as they make a fair contribution, just as the British taxpayer does.
